This is another yummy bread recipe that’s surprisingly easy and makes for a brilliant breakfast, as well as using up bread that might otherwise go to waste.
Easy French Toast
French toast, called Pain Perdu in French (or if you prefer, Eggy Bread!) is an absolute breeze to make and a delicious way of using up slightly stale bread. It makes a great breakfast or brunch dish. You can serve it with whatever you happen to have available. Tempted? Read on and we're sure you'll be sure you'll be in the kitchen soon whipping up your very own French Toast!
- Serves 4
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 60ml milk
- 4 slices of bread – we recommend a nice white or country bread, and slices from a brioche loaf are also really good and extra rich
Method
- Beat the egg with the vanilla essence and cinnamon in a shallow dish and stir in the milk. Remember you need to be able use this dish to dip the bread slices into the mixture, so a wide shallow dish is good.
- Dip the bread slices in the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides evenly.
- Heat a lightly greased non-stick pan over a medium heat and cook the egg-coated bread slices until browned on both sides.
- These are so good when served with your choice of cream, crème fraîche, thick yoghurt and fresh berries such as strawberries, raspberries or blueberries. Sliced banana is also good, as is a dash of maple syrup. And we wouldn’t say not to a slice of crispy bacon! Bon appétit – more recipes coming soon.
